CHAPTER ELEVEN

The sleep was deep and instant, almost intoxicating. But after everything he’d been through, Sir Thomas didn’t fight it. It was a welcome reprieve from his and Detective Taylor’s obstacles. He had fought hard to get here, and a moment of rest would do him some good.

He dreamed about good times, frequent rest, unending plates of his favorite foods piled high, and the accolades and glory he’d add to his already long list of achievements as a feline of the Swashbuckling Order.

Sir Thomas had earned a reprieve, especially after all the time and effort he had given in service to Lady Charlotte and her ambitious endeavors to save both intersecting worlds from villainous magical destruction.

Though he felt at the moment that he’d earned many things—especially from this adventure—he hadn’t done any of it for rewards. He had done it out of loyalty, a sense of rightness, and the honor of seeing Lady Charlotte at her finest while fighting with a human at her side. He’d desired nothing more than to offer his knowledge, companionship, and sword to aid her.

Then again, of course, he couldn’t refuse if the fairy godmother or even the detective had decided their small but mighty companion deserved a reward.

“And you will have your reward…”

The voice came from everywhere and nowhere deep within Sir Thomas’s mind. He drifted deeper into the darkness of unconsciousness he hadn’t been able to achieve since entering this quest cave with his companions. He never thought he would have needed it, but now that it was here, Sir Thomas was only too happy to indulge in the comforts of dreams, sleep, and whatever rewards that disembodied voice had spoken of.

The next thing he knew, Sir Thomas was standing in the center of a wide-open meadow, thick with grasses and radiant, blooming wildflowers that stretched out in all directions as far as he could see.

The sky was a brilliant azure blue without a cloud in sight. A warm sun beat down on his fur, making his coat shine beneath its light. The air smelled like fresh grass, honeysuckle, and warm earth. Birds twittered overhead while insects droned in their hidden places within the long grasses and clumps of wildflowers dotting the meadow.

Sir Thomas felt free here. He could be whoever and whatever he wanted. If he wished to claim his rewards, he could claim them, but all he really wanted was to venture out into the open sea of long, swaying grasses and indulge in the moment. For the first time in years, the magical cat felt his own restrictions all too keenly. This was the type of place where freedom was all that existed.

Looking down, he took in his attire and realized it would hinder him. He’d never felt so trapped before as he did right then. He started with the wide leather belt always strapped around his hips, which held his sword and scabbard.

Once unbuckled, he set the ensemble aside in the grass, then reached for his floppy, wide-brimmed hat that held a single feather in the band.
